Fall Car Care Tips

Fall Car Care Tips in Clinton, SC

Leaves are changing colors, which means it's an ideal time to do a check-up on your vehicle. Winter months can wear down car parts, but there are easy steps you can take to prevent a flat tire or dead battery. We've listed four car care tips below: keep reading to figure out how to maintain the health of your car, SUV or truck during the colder months.

Top 4 Fall Tips

1. Tire Tread and Pressure

Tires deflate fast in wintertime: for every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop in temperature, tires can lose up to one pound of pressure. That means you'll have less traction on those slick roads. If you have summer tires on your car, go ahead and switch them with all-season tires for a better grip. Your owner's manual will list the correct pressure, but if you've lost the pressure gauge (happens more than we like to admit), we like using the penny method to check your tire's tread: place a penny in different spots in the tread grooves, measuring how much of the penny appears. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, your treads are less than the recommended 2/32" if you see most of Lincoln's head.

2. Battery

Car batteries are affected by colder temperatures like your tires are, so pop your hood for a quick check. Battery connections should be clean, tight and free of discolored corrosion. It's probably a good idea to have your battery tested too: if it's more than three years old, go ahead and have it replaced. Batteries normally die without warning, and it's no fun waiting for a ride on the side of an icy road.

3. Heating and Cooling

You might not get away with rolling down the windows in the winter due to faulty heating and cooling systems like you did in the summer. Ensuring that those systems are performing well aid in comfort, but also help in safety, too.

4. Lights

With days becoming shorter and mornings darker, the lights on your car will be used more often. A good idea is to partner with a friend to double check your lights and don't forget the brake lights! Replace dead bulbs as soon as possible to stay safe.
